Two charged after vehicle stop

Two people were cited following a traffic stop in Tamaqua on Monday morning.

At 2:24 a.m., an officer on patrol saw a black Chevrolet Cobalt driving east on East Broad Street, heading toward Coaldale. The Cobalt had heavily tinted windows and a missing driver's side mirror.The car was stopped in the area of the auto parts store on Route 209 and the driver identified as Taylor Anne Paton, 20, of Summit Hill. Paton spoke with slurred speech, was lethargic and had glassy eyes.She told the officer she hadn't taken any drugs, except for a Vicodin for which she had a prescription.A passenger in the vehicle was identified as Brett David Kerschner, 19, of Andreas.Paton was given, and failed, field sobriety tests and agreed to have a blood test at Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville.Kerschner was then asked to step out of the car. As he did, a hypodermic needle was plainly visible on the passenger seat. He admitted to using heroin, telling the officers they both did heroin he by using a needle, Paton by snorting it. When asked about Kerschner's statement, she admitted doing heroin about six hours earlier.The car was towed.She was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance. He was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
