Students warm seniors' hearts

They warmed their hearts, made them laugh, and entertained their audience with a twinkle in their eyes.

In short, Slatington Elementary students were more like Santa's little helpers during the school's annual Senior Citizens' Holiday Program on Tuesday.Principal Scott Pyne welcomed the senior citizens from nursing homes and assisted living in the Slatington community in attendance."I'm happy to see so many brave the cold weather," Pyne said. "I'm really happy to see we could get so many people to come out."Pyne then acknowledged instructor Lori Middaugh, whom he gave a special thanks to for coordinating the event. The program got underway with a performance by the sixth-grade band, which performed "Frosty the Snowman" and "Not So Silent Night."Next, the sixth grade sang "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" before they read the poems "Little Christmas Carolers" and "Snowball."Afterward, the fourth grade sang "A Marshmallow World." They then played "Jolly Old St. Nicholas," "Jingle Bells" and "Ode to Joy" on their flutophones before they read holiday jokes. From there, the fifth grade sang "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" before they read the "Christmas Acrostic Poem."Finally, the third grade read the poem "Winter Morning Poem" before they sang "The Penguin Polka" and "Santa is My Buddy."Once the entertainment wrapped up, senior citizens made their way upstairs, where they were treated to dinner.Throughout the dinner, the Northern Lehigh High School choir, Treblemakers, performed under the direction of Rachel Reiter.William Turk, of Walnutport, said he was impressed with the event."I think this is a really nice program, not just for the seniors, but anyone who comes," Turk said. "Just to see them all celebrating Christmas and happy to be here as well."The program was revived in 2011 after a one-year hiatus so renovation work could be completed at the building.
