Man sent to prison in assault of two girls

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a long state prison term Thursday afternoon after previously admitting he assaulted two young girls, with the cases 20 years apart.

Herman Banks Hollenbach, 57, of Palmerton, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to a total term of 58 to 116 months in a state correctional institution.Hollenbach previously pleaded guilty in two pending cases. In the first case he pleaded to one count of aggravated indecent assault. In that case he was sentenced to serve 22 to 44 months. In the second case he pleaded to one count each of statutory sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and corruption of minors. On those charges he was sentenced to serve 12 to 24 months on each count with them running consecutive to each other and consecutive to the first count. The second case dates back about 20 years. In the first case filed, on Jan. 17, 2013, Palmerton police officer Kevin Buck was requested to contact the Palmerton hospital emergency room. He was told that a mother was there with her juvenile daughter reporting that she had been sexually assaulted. The mother told Buck her daughter first told her aunt she did not want to go to Hollenbach's house because she felt uncomfortable. The aunt told the mother. The mother then questioned her daughter, who told her that Hollenbach had been touching her inappropriately.Later the girl was interviewed at the child Advocacy Center in Scranton, where the details of the sexual misconduct were brought to light. The victim was 11 and 12 years old at the time of the incidents. While investigating the incident, Buck was approached by a woman who told him she was sexually assaulted by Hollenbach when she was 11 and 12 years old, which was 20 years earlier. She said the sexual assaults continued until she was 15.In the first case, four counts of indecent assault, two counts of aggravated indecent assault, and one count each of indecent exposure and corruption of minors were dropped. In the second case charges of corruption of minors, two counts of rape and indecent assault, and one count each of incest, were dropped. Before the start of the sentencing proceeding Nanovic conducted a hearing to determine if Hollenbach falls under Megan's Law provisions of being a sexual violent predator. After listening to testimony and argument in the matter, Nanovic ruled Hollenbach was a sexual violent predator and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.In addition to the jail term, Nanovic ordered Hollenbach must submit to a sexual offenders evaluation, supply a DNA sample, get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, make restitution the victims' family for $1,000, pay court costs of about $1,000, have no contact with any of the victims, have no contact with any minor children without proper supervision, and follow all registration requirements and rules set forth in Megan's Law.Hollenbach, who has been in the county prison since his arrest in 2013, was given credit for 691 days.
