Aquashicola home razed for more parking

Several Lower Towamensing Township residents have asked for clarification after a twin home located next to the Aquashicola Fire Company was razed.

Resident Douglas Eckhart asked the board of supervisors on Tuesday what happened to the home, and what plans were for the property now that it's vacant.Supervisors said the twin home at 290-292 Little Gap Road was torn down at the behest of the fire company by Todd Green Construction.A demolition permit was issued by the township's code enforcement officer back in September, supervisors said. The purpose for the demolition of the property is for parking lot expansions and safer access, to the fire company, located at 270 Little Gap Road.Later, resident Herman Bollinger told supervisors "the people want to know what happened to that house."Bollinger suggested that the home could have been recycled in terms of lumber and scrap.Further, Bollinger said he heard it might be on (former township supervisor) Glen Hahn's property, or at the sand quarry.Crash questionedAlso on Tuesday, Bollinger asked supervisors if they had any new information on a crash that occurred recently in the township.Bollinger then voiced his disdain toward the board, and said that all three supervisors went against him and closed Route 248 and Club Road.He then suggested that if Club Road wouldn't have been blocked off, maybe the driver who hit the pole might not have been driving there, and could have avoided the accident entirely.Township solicitor Jim Nanovic told Bollinger that the supervisors didn't approve the closure, but that the state Department of Transportation did.Green told Bollinger that PennDOT "concluded it was a dangerous intersection and closed it down."Further, Green added "any complaint we received, we forwarded it to PennDOT."A center median barrier was constructed by PennDOT workers at the intersection to permanently prohibit vehicles from making a left-hand turn from Route 248 onto Club Road, as well as from Club Road onto Route 248.A traffic and engineering study found about 40 percent of crashes at this intersection are rear-end collisions, related to left turning vehicles from the passing lane.
