Illegal immigration rising in NJ, Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON (AP) – Immigrants entering illegally into the U.S. are increasingly making states along the East Coast their home rather than states closer to the Mexican border.

A new report by the Pew Research Center finds that New Jersey, Florida and Pennsylvania were among seven states to register gains in unauthorized immigrants from 2009 to 2012. That came even as the total number of immigrants in the U.S. unlawfully was unchanged at 11.2 million.

New Jersey had the biggest gain, jumping 75,000 to 525,000. Many of them were from India and Ecuador.

It was followed by Florida and Pennsylvania.

The Keystone State saw increases from several regions including Honduras, India and the Dominican Republic.

Other states with increases in illegal immigration were Maryland, Virginia, Idaho and Nebraska.
