Laughton will always be trivia answer

Even if you're not good at trivia, if you can remember one name, there's one trivia question that you will always get right.

Who scored the first official Phantoms' goal at the PPL Center? Remember the name Scott Laughton. The 20-year old from Oakville, Ontario notched the first Phantoms goal and later added a second, in a 4-3 overtime win against Adirondack back on October 17th.Through the first three games of the season, the 20-year old Laughton scored four goals, good enough to make him the answer to another trivia question; who was the first Lehigh Valley Phantoms player to be named the AHL Player of the Week?At that point, everything looked to be near perfect for Laughton, who was off to a strong start with an organization that may certainly be looking for help from below during the season and, he was playing in a place that he has really come to enjoy playing."It's really nice. Nice building, lots of fan support and it's been good so far," said Laughton after a recent game.Right around the time that he received his Player of the Week award, there was talk that he could be headed to Philadelphia to join the Flyers, but that didn't happen, leaving Laughton to toil with Lehigh Valley. If he does get the call up to the Flyers, it won't be his first trip to the NHL. In January of 2013, Laughton was brought up by the Flyers and made his debut against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Being in the NHL at just 18 years of age made the experience pretty difficult for Laughton."It seems like a pretty long time ago now; two years ago now. I was just 18 and I don't think I really understood what was going on. It was a whirlwind experience and for two weeks, I was up there and it was crazy," said Laughton about the experience.Things have turned tough for Laughton, who has now scored just one goal in his last eight games. The team went through a four-game winless streak before beating Manchester 3-2 on the road last Friday. Before the team left for their recent road trip, Laughton admitted that neither he nor the team were playing their best hockey."I started pretty good, but the last three games have been tough. I've got to pick it up here and I think that as a team, we have to be better and we've got to put this past us," admitted Laughton. "I just think we haven't been good. At the end of the day, we didn't play our game and we gave them way too many chances."Phantom Facts ... Shayne Gostisbehere got some bad news when he was told he would need surgery to repair a torn ACL that he suffered in Manchester. There's no timetable for Gostisbehere's return, but Flyers GM Ron Hextall believes that Gostisbehere will return before the end of the season … Veteran goalie Rob Zepp saved 42 shots against the Manchester Monarchs, setting a new Lehigh Valley Phantoms record. The Phantoms won the game 3-2 on the strength of two goals from Andrew Gordon … Darroll Powe became the second Phantoms player to be suspended this season. Powe was suspended for two games for an illegal check to the head of an opponent in Worcester, the first game of the road trip. Powe will return Friday night when the team plays in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton … Lehigh Valley is 5-5-1 and will return home Saturday night against Toronto after wrapping up their four-game road trip.EDITOR'S NOTE: Once a week throughout the AHL season, the Times News will run a Lehigh Valley Phantoms feature/column written by correspondent Chuck Hixson.
