Man gets state time for meth lab operation

A Carbon County man was sentenced in the county court on Monday to a state prison term after previously pleading guilty to a charge of operating a methamphetamine lab.

Judge Joseph J. Matika sentenced William David Barnes, 36, of Lansford, to serve 18 to 36 months in a state correctional institution.The prison term will be followed by two years of state probation.Barnes was arrested on June 30 at his residence, 237 W. Patterson St., by agents of the state Attorney General's office and borough police after a search warrant at his home.Police found numerous items that were consistent with making meth.Barnes was arrested just five days after he pleaded guilty in the county court to charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass. He was placed on probation for six months.Matika noted that incident Monday.At the original plea hearing Barnes showed up in Matika's courtroom highly under the influence of a controlled substance.Matika ordered the adult probation office to test Barnes.Office personnel reported Barnes was under the influence of multiple illegal drugs. The result prompted Matika to remark, "Ben Franklin couldn't fly a kite as high as you are now."Matika jailed Barnes for contempt for two days to give him a chance to "come down."On Monday Barnes told Matika, "I just want to say I'm sorry. I just want to get home to my kid."Matika said Barnes has gone through drug rehabilitation programs, including ones in the state prison system, and failed them all.Matika warned Barnes, "If you keep going down this path he (his son) won't see you again."In addition to the jail term, Matika ordered Barnes to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, and supply a DNA sample.He was given credit for 112 days already spent in jail on the charges.
