Fall Foliage Festival wraps up with fun

The final day of the 2014 Fall Foliage Festival was likely its coldest, but that didn't stop visitors from converging on downtown Jim Thorpe to enjoy all it had to offer.

Coats were a common sight on Sunday as the temperature was expected to max out around 50 degrees. For many, the chill was welcome. After all, we are closing in on late October."Honestly, I'd rather be cold than hot," said Carlos Minarik, of Syracuse, New York, who was visiting family in Nesquehoning. "It's still a beautiful day for us. I'm used to a lot colder than this."Fun joined food on the menu in Josiah White Park, where vendors lined the grounds selling everything from burgers and pierogies to soft pretzels and fudge. With all the choices, some families had a hard time deciding what to eat first."We usually have trouble choosing when we come to festivals," said Dianne Ford of Frackville, who attended the festival with her husband and two children. The family eventually opted for a sit-down meal at Antonio's Pizzeria on West Broadway. The lure of the small town during its most scenic time of year is what brought the Schulz family from Pottsville to Jim Thorpe for the afternoon."We love the atmosphere and the energy around town," said Angela Schulz as her family waited for a horse-drawn carriage ride. "It's great to see a place where small, local businesses can thrive because that isn't happening everywhere. You can see that it's October on your calendar, but when you come here to the festival you can really feel it. We're repeat visitors and we'll be back again."One of the highlights of a weekend day in JimThorpe is a ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, and many festival visitors took the opportunity for an excursion."We love riding the train when we come up here," said Ruben Smith of Fogelsville. "It sort of separates this from a lot of the other fairs and festivals because it's unique. You go elsewhere and for the most part you're choosing from the same food offerings, and shopping is shopping to me, but the train ride is a really cool thing."Traffic flowed smoothly through downtown as Jim Thorpe Borough police ensured pedestrian safety crossing the main thoroughfares.Satellite parking was again set up at Mauch Chunk Lake, a move that event organizers said helped alleviate congestion on each of the festival's three weekends.Several parking spots, however, could still be had along West Broadway early Sunday afternoon."We didn't have any trouble," Schulz said. "We had to walk a little bit, but that was expected, and it's good for you."Music options were spaced out throughout town.A large group, including Minarik, stopped to take in the Shellshocked Churchills on the steps of the Mauch Chunk Opera House."The music is fantastic," Minarik said. "It adds to the excitement of the day."
