Southern Lehigh routs Palmerton

Southern Lehigh quarterback Travis Edmond is finally a senior and there are a lot of Colonial League football teams breathing a sigh of relief.

Edmond gave Palmerton fans one last glimpse of his talent on Friday night when he completed 11 of 20 passes, threw four for touchdowns and ran for one as the Spartans rolled to a 68-21 win."We were flat coming out of the gates," said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. "We were a little tight."Southern Lehigh's a good team. They're well coaches, they're a class act of doing things. We responded well after their first touchdown and came right back and scored and at that point I thought we'd be in a slugfest."But we had a bunch of miscues tonight on both sides of the ball and they scored on big plays to show their explosiveness."It goes back to what we've been saying all year. We can't give up big plays defensively and you can't do that against a good, solid team."The Spartans (5-1) started the game driving 65 yards on just five plays with a 40-yard pass completion to Austin Hughes followed by a 35-yard completion to Ethan Price for the first TD pass from Edmonds with 11:03 still left in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed giving Solehi a 6-0 advantage. The Bombers put together a nice drive on their first possession with a 24-yard pass from Garrett Perschy to Nick Sander good for a touchdown. Rich Roselli booted the PAT and the Bombers took a 7-6 lead. But back came the Spartans.Dylan Niedbalski broke loose for a 43-yard gain before being stopped at the Palmerton one. Edmond managed to sneak in on the next play with Eli Watkins booting the point after for a 13-7 Solehi lead. The Bombers were on the move, only to have their first mistake, a 15-yard penalty, nullify a first down in Solehi territory with Perschy hooking up with Dominic Shivone.Southern Lehigh couldn't muster any offense, but Niedbalski proved to be tough on defense as in intercepted a pass and took it 20 yards for a touchdown with still 2:51 left in the first quarter. Watkins' PAT made it 20-7 and they weren't done yet.The Spartans put together a 10-play drive starting on their own 46 which ended on an Edmonds-to-Matt Watkins pass for a 28-yard TD. Watkins booted the PAT for a 27-7 lead.Just 55 seconds later, Palmerton (4-2) answered when he hooked up with Nick Sander for a 63-yard touchdown with Roselli making it 27-14.Southern Lehigh had two more scores under its belt before intermission. One was a one-yard run by Tim Walter and the other was a 54-yard pass from Edmond to Price as the half ended giving the Spartans a 41-19 cushion.Matt Watkins caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Edmond followed by a two-yard score from James Weider to make it 54-14 putting the game under the "Mercy Rule" with 9:09 left.Josh Mohr recovered a fumble in the end zone for another Spartan score before Isaac George raced 22-yards to the pylon for Palmerton's final score.Southern Lehigh's Luke Strauss ran back a kickoff 82 yards to make the final score 68-21.""We're going to take this as a lesson and say 'alright, this is where we need to go to' and use this as an example," said Walkowiak. "We didn't come to play tonight, we'll look at the film and we'll correct that.
