Dead baby's mom faces charges

Schuylkill County prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of endangering the welfare of children against a woman accused of giving birth in the shower and then putting her newborn's body in the trash.

But District Judge David Plachko, Port Carbon, sent charges of concealing the death of a child, recklessly endangering another person, and abuse of a corpse against Tara Lynne Paltanavage, 22, of Middleport, to court. She remains in the county jail under $250,000 cash bail.Paltanavage's preliminary hearing was scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday. However, some time before that, she was brought to Plachko's office, where the endangering charge was dropped and where she waived her right to a hearing on the other charges. On July 29, Paltanavage gave birth in the shower of the small, ramshackle home she shared with at least two other people. She told police the baby was born dead, although county coroner David Moylan said that an autopsy revealed the infant was born alive.Paltanavage told police that when she lifted the baby from the water, it (the sex could not be determined) was not breathing. She told police she did not call 911 or call for help.Instead, according to an affidavit of probable cause, she wrapped the tiny body in a red towel, which she put in a trash bag, then put more household trash on top of it.Then, according to police, she put the bag outside to be taken away with the trash. On Aug. 5, Paltanavage's roommates, Kayla Stoops and Joseph Jiminez, took their own trash out and discovered the body after looking for the source of a terrible odor emanating from Paltanavage's bag.Moylan has said the body was too badly decomposed to immediately determine a cause and manner of death.Although she had steadily gained weight and had morning sickness in the months leading up the birth, Paltanavage denied being pregnant, police learned.
