Lehighton may eventually have a camera system installed to prevent further damage at one of its primary playgrounds.
Borough Council agreed on a 6-0 vote on Monday to obtain an estimate from LPC Electric of Jim Thorpe to see what it would cost to put in a camera system at the Grove. CouncilmanDarryl Arner was absent.Councilman Scott Rehrig said damage done at the Grove, located on Iron Street in between Seventh and Eighth streets, has been continuous.Rehrig then suggested that perhaps a camera system should be installed. In the event that doesn't work, he said the borough may have to close the Grove down. The Grove has a large playground, volleyball court, basketball court, tennis courts, a pavilion with picnic tables, and new comfort stations. Each July, the borough hosts a supervised playground program for all local children, which includes sports and crafts. After the meeting, borough Manager Nicole Beckett said a piece of equipment has been destroyed on numerous occasions."Also, someone had filled the toilets and urinals in the comfort stations with large rocks," Beckett said. "The continuous damage at the Grove is costing the borough a lot of money and manpower."Beckett said anyone with information about who has damaged the equipment should contact the borough police department.
