A new entrance for municipal building

The Polk Township board of supervisors approved a bid (2-0, Brian Ahner absent) to construct a new entrance to the municipal building. The bid was awarded to Pencor Construction at $4,425 for a new wall and door as a second entrance to make the building more secure. The issue of security of its employees and residents came about as a result of the tragic events at the Ross Township supervisors' meeting in August 2013.

In other business, the board approved, 2-0:• to purchase guard rails for Smith Road from Morgan Rails, not to exceed $10,300.• Halloween Trick or Treat night from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. In case of bad weather, it will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.• the Francine Fischer lot joinder plan, combining three lots at Robinhood Drive and Arrow Lane to make a 0.661 acre lot.• to write a letter of support to the West End Fair Association for an LSA grant to enlarge the fair's business office.• to write a letter of support to Eldred Township for an LSA grant to buy the previous Eldred Elementary School.• Resolution 2014-03-amended and restated declaration of trust for PSATS Health Insurance Trust• Resolution 2014-04-amended and restated declaration of trust for PSATS Pension Trust.Nancy May, Polk Township's supervisor/secretary reported:• that birdseed from Monroe County Conservation District may be ordered at the township building during office hours. Forms are available. The deadline is Thursday, Oct. 16.• the township municipal office will be closed Monday, Oct. 13, Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Thursday, Nov. 27.• the township will take used CFL bulbs through an Ecova program sponsored by PPL. The residents who have a yearly permit for use of the Solid Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Center should take the bulbs there. The residents that do not should take them to the municipal building.Gerald Zurat, the township zoning/codes officer reported:• 38 permits were issued• held 17 inspections, mostly septic• issued one new home permit• there four permits pending• received seven complaints.The Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority is going to continue to take televisions and monitors at no cost so residents can bring those items to the township's transfer station.The township's garage's back roof has been repaired by M.J. Shisslak General Contractor, Kresgeville.The Polk Township Fire Company responded to 18 calls in September. Fire chief Billy Tippet reported that the fire company will be hosting the Glick Traveling Road Fire Show by Pierce Distributors to be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday. This show is open to the public. There will be a large showcase of emergency responder units. There will be new equipment on display, giveaways and fellowship with other area departments. Refreshments will be available.In other fire company business:• Oct. 6-10 is Fire Prevention Week and the fire company will be visiting Pleasant Valley School District schools for demonstrations and instructions on fire safety.• From noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 12, the fire company will host its annual Fire Safety Day at the firehouse in Kresgeville.• Spaghetti dinner will be from 4-7:30 p.m. Oct. 4C.J. dickinson@westendems.com.Township recording secretary Ruthanne Toner informed the board that grant monies are available through LSA, DCED and PennDOT Multimodal Transportation Funds. It would be too late to apply this year but she thought the board might want to consider applying for funds for 2015.
