Barrett helps residents as search for Frein continues

Barrett Township supervisor Loree Guthrie is confident police will catch accused cop-killer and self-styled survivalist Eric Frein, whom police believe is hiding in the area after gunning down Cpl. Bryon Dickson last Friday night as left the Blooming Glen barracks during a shift change.

"I'm cautiously optimistic that state police will have this resolved very soon. They're certainly trying. They are being extremely diligent in trying to get this guy," she said.State police have warned residents of Barrett and Price townships to continue to stay inside as they intensify their search for Frein. They closed roads and forbidden travel in the area since gunshots were heard at about 6:40 last evening. Police surrounded a house on Bear Town Road near Rote 447, staying on alter there until early Saturday morning."We've opened the fire house for people who are unable or afraid to go home," Guthrie said. "There are areas that have been cordoned off. Our firefighters are there to assist people in need. We are a pretty self-reliant area, and I think we take care of our people very well."State police had not released further updates as of 11 a.m. this morning.Police believe Frein, a survivalist and expert marksman who is heavily involved in paramilitary games and has ranted publicly about his anti-government feelings, ambushed Dickson and Trooper Alex Douglass at about 10:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Douglass continues to recover from his serious gunshot wounds.Police on Monday found identification and other evidence in a car Frein was using that had partially sunk in a retention pond about two miles from the barracks. a search of his parents' Canadensis home, where he lived, turned up ammunition that matched that used in the attack on the troopers, and other evidence. He's eluded police ever since."It's a very dense wooded area. With all the foliage still on the trees, it's difficult to see," Guthrie said. "It's pretty much the deep, dark woods."Anyone who believes they may have seen Frein or who has any new information can call the TIP line at 866-326-7256.Frein has been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. According to the agency's alert page, "Frein is known to be a heavy smoker, a weapons enthusiast, and a survivalist. He claims to have fought with Serbians in Africa, and he has studied Russian and Serbian languages. He may have shaved his head on both sides and have long hair on top. He was last seen with no facial hair and was wearing a brown and gold windbreaker, khaki shorts, and sneakers. He was carrying a dark green backpack with black trim."
