Historical societyThe Nesquehoning Historical Society will host its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafe of MapleShade Meadows, 50 E. Locust St.The evening will include a special presentation on the founding of Pennsylvania by Joseph Roman Jr., an adjunct professor of history at Lehigh Carbon Community College and a Nesquehoning resident. He will talk about the impact that William Penn's Quaker beliefs had on his proposals for structure of the colonial government.Meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be sesrved.LansfordGolden AgersThe Sept. 8 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.The sing-along was led by Norma Lee Burke, and jokes for senior citizens were presented by Ruth Ann Feane.The 91st birthday of Alex Makita, membership chairman for the past 15 years, was honored.The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Monday.Robert Mikulski and Jackie Verbauz of Carbon, Monroe and Pike Counties will present a video on controlling gambling habits.Bingo will be played at the end of the meeting.Anyone 55 and older is invited to join the club.Dues are still only $3 and are now being collected.Summit HillVolunteers needed at food pantryVolunteers are needed to assist with distributing food at the Summit Hill Food Pantry for 1 to 2 hours per month, typically on the fourth Tuesday.Upcoming dates are Tuesday and Oct. 28 from 10-11:30 a.m.During November and December, food will be distributed on the fourth Monday because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.Those dates are Nov. 24 and Dec. 22, from 10-11:30 a.m.These will be the only two days available for food distribution during the holidays.Most pantries in Carbon County are managed in the same way and are always in need of volunteers.If you can spare an extra couple of hours each month, please consider volunteering at your local food pantry.For more information or to volunteer in Summit Hill, please contact Rose Marie at 570-645-3604.The Summit Hill Food Pantry is located at the corner of Hazard and Chestnut Streets in the Summit Hill Heritage Center.Flag programThe Summit Hill Lions Club is continues its American flag program. During the good weather months, the flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of veterans from the community.During the week of Sept. 22, the flag will fly in memory of the late Carlo J. Collevechio.He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 194th Glider Infantry, 17th Airborne Division. He attained the rank of private first class, and he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy. Collevechio was also the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, having been wounded in action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge on Jan. 8, 1945. He was honorably discharged with the Honorable Service Lapel Button for World War II.The deceased served as president of the Summit Hill Borough Council for many years.Family members of veterans, or veterans themselves, can request to have the flag flown in honor or memory of any town veteran.
