Suspect linked to military re-enactment group

A Monroe County man suspected of shooting two state troopers, killing one and injuring another Friday night, belonged to a military simulation unit based in eastern Pennsylvania, according to state police.

As part of the re-enactment group, Eric Matthew Frein, 31, of Canadensis, portrayed an Eastern European soldier during the Cold War.“In his current frame of mind, it appears Frein has assumed that role in real life,” Lt. Col. George Bevins said during a news conference.Frein, a reported self-taught survivalist, has shaved his head tightly on both sides with long hair on top, yet wider than a Mohawk-style cut, police said.“We believe he made this hairstyle change in preparation to commit this cowardly act,” Bevins said. From a secluded area outside the Blooming Grove state police barracks in Pike County late Friday night, Frein reportedly fatally shot Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounded trooper Alex Douglass with a .308 rifle that included a scope.“He could have been anywhere from 300 to 1,000 yards away,” Bevins said.In addition to his time portraying an eastern European soldier, Frein had actually traveled to Europe within the last few years.Police did not specify which country he visited, or the nature of his trip.Frein remained on the loose Wednesday as law enforcement received multiple reported sightings including several in Carbon County. All sightings turned out to be false.“We have well over 150 law enforcement officers involved in the search, which we have expanded even out of the state at this point,” Bevins said. “Authorities are maximizing the resources available and that would include search dogs.”
