Marian's Capparell, Pleas. Vy.'s Slavin shine

Despite Mother Nature's havoc on Saturday, several soccer games played out, as Lehighton and Pleasant Valley boys and the Northwestern, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe girls soccer teams all prevailed in wins. Northern Lehigh also won in field hockey. Of all The Times News teams participating in the 35th Annual DeSales Centaur Invitational, two in particular stood out above the rest of the participants.

CROSS COUNTRYDeSales InvitationalMarian Catholic's Tina Capparell finished in second place in the girls' 5k race with a time of 19:31.94, nearly nine seconds behind Southern Lehigh's Meseret Hart (19:23.04). In the boys' race, Pleasant Valley's Seth Slavin placed second with a time of 16:16.83. Hatboro Horsham's Casey Comber ran away with the top spot, finishing in 15:57.82.Seven other area runners placed in the top 25 of their respective sides. For the girls, Jen Mickens (19:52.92) finished 9th and Lizz Eberhardt (19:59.13) took 10th for Pleasant Valley. Northwestern had four girls finish in the top 25: Carly Pierce (13th, 20:16.21), Rachel Mikols (18th, 20:28.85), Molly Tarvin (20th, 20:30.05) and Paige Stitzel (24th, 20:44.88). Northwestern's Brayden Heller placed 24th with a time of 17:13.68 for the boys.The other top finishers for TIMES NEWS area teams are as follows: Tamaqua's Kailee Carroll (27th, 20:55.81), Northern Lehigh's Gavin Kemery (30th, 17:23.84), Lehighton's Michael Blacketter (41st, 17:35.98), Lehighton's Cera Gaston (59th, 22:21.88), Northern Lehigh's Nina Schynder (88th, 23:15.60), Tamaqua's Andrew Tite (94th, 18:40.18) and Marian Catholic's Aaron Srinivasan (103rd, 18:45.73).Parkland won both team competitions on the day.BOYS SOCCERNo. Schuylkill-LehightonLehighton received a huge game from Dan Baka to lead his team in a rout of North Schuylkill, 10-1.Baka finished the game with a hat trick and three assists in a well-rounded offensive gem. Zach Christoff and Joe Marks both scored a goal and an assist for the Tribe, who move into second place in their division with the win.Frank Bokan, Chris Lawler, Ben Cordova and Patrick Lawler all recorded sole goals for the Indians, who improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.Both sides conceded own goals in the game, to round out the scoring.Lehighton outshot the Spartans 24-3.Dieruff--Pleasant ValleyClinging to a 1-0 halftime edge, Pleasant Valley went off in the second half to pull out a 4-0 EPC win over Dieruff.Justin Habick recorded a hat trick for the Bears, who improve to 4-1-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the league. Danny McGinley recorded the other score for the winners, who had a 12-3 edge in shots.Wayne Schnider and Zac Madeira both had assists for the Bears, as well, while teammate Austin Smale stopped three shots for the shutout.Ronald Nguyena had 10 saves for the Huskies in the losing effort.Tamaqua-CatasauquaCatasauqua proved to be too much for Tamaqua, as they pulled away for a 6-0 shutout win.Steve Leon scored twice, while teammate Majed Salama matched the output for the Rough Riders. Nick Rossnagle and Johnny Dweck both scored individual tallies in the winning effort.Joe Harakal, Dionis Lora, Jake Rossnagle, Dave Wetherhold and Jason Hoch all added assists for the Roughies.In a game that saw Catty outshoot the Blue Raiders 13-3, Tamaqua goalie Hunter Banavage stopped seven shots on goal.GIRLS SOCCERWeatherly-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe managed a 11-1 win over Weatherly in a Schuylkill League game.For the Lady Olympians, Jackie Condly and Nicole Reinhart both scored two goals in the easy win. Monea Principe, Meghan Principe, Ilse Hassler, Gianna Bucci, Alyssa Smith, Autumn Cope and Camille Principe all scored sole goals for the winners, as well.Meghan Moon scored the Lady Wreckers' goal to prevent a shutout.The Weatherly tandem of Shannon Frye and Ally Watkins teamed up for a combined 32 saves in the game, as Frye tallied 28.Meanwhile, Anna Beard had two saves for the winners, who outshot their opponents 43-3 in the contest.Northwestern-FreedomDespite taking a 1-0 halftime lead, Freedom was unable to withstand Northwestern, as the Lady Tigers came back for a 2-1 win.Rachel Capuano scored the first half goal for Freedom.However, Leighanna Lister scored off a feed from Claire O'Dea to tie things up, and was followed by an unassisted score from teammate Courtney Page.Freedom outshot the winners 12-3 in the game, as Tiger goalkeeper Laura Kotula stopping 10 shots on goal.No. Lehigh-TamaquaTamaqua returned to its winning ways with a 4-1 non-league win over Northern Lehigh.Lori Kisner led the Lady Raiders with two goal, while teammates Angela Ceci and Lynn Kistler both scored individual goals. Kayla Wickersham had two assists and Kistler notched a feed, as well.Tamaqua outshot the Lady Bulldogs 24-12 in the game, with Morgan Boyle recording 11 saves for the winners.Darby Pender scored the Nolehi goal unassisted early in the second half .FIELD HOCKEYLehighton-No. LehighThe Bulldogs scored three goals in the first half and three more in the second half en route to a 6-1 non-league win over the Indians.Erika McKay scored two goals for Northern Lehigh, while Alyssa Fritzinger, Britni Pristash, Taylor Herman and Jess Olewine scored the others. Megan McCullion scored the lone Lehighton goal.
