Bulldogs' fake turns the tide

A big play can quickly swing momentum in a football game.

Northern Lehigh used a fake punt in the third quarter to take control of Saturday's game at Wilson en route to a 20-15 win over the Warriors."That fake punt was definitely big," said Northern Lehigh running back Nate Farber, who led his team with 98 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. "We were a little down coming into the half and that fake punt just swung the momentum"Trailing 15-8, the Bulldogs faced a fourth-and-three at their own 37-yard line. They lined up in punt formation, but snapped the ball to up back Ryan Farber, who raced up the middle for a 30-yard gain. Two plays later Nate Farber broke free for a 24-yard touchdown run to close the Wilson lead to 15-14.The Bulldogs (2-1) forced a Warrior three-and-out before mounting the go-ahead touchdown drive, going 67 yards in seven plays for a 20-15 lead. The trick play got Northern Lehigh all the momentum it needed to take over in the second half."That was huge," said long snapper Stephen Scheib. "I knew it was coming. I whispered to the line 'Hey, get ready. Listen to the call.' I knew I had to snap it to that up back."It was Ryan Farber's only carry of the day, but it was the one his team needed most."That was a nice momentum change," said Bulldog head coach Joe Tout. "Credit goes to Ryan Farber. There wasn't a big hole there. Once he got through that was a big momentum shifter."The Bulldogs did their best to contain Wilson running back Nick Labatch, who ran for 183 yards on 34 carries. Their defense, led by Scheib, Cameron Kates and Jason Schaffer, made key stops late in the game.Wilson (0-3) had a chance to answer late in the fourth quarter, but came up emtpy. The Warriors started on their own 27-yard line with 7:41 left in the game. Ten plays later they had a first down at the Bulldog 25-yard line.On first down, Northern Lehigh's Austin Arnold tackled Labatch for a one-yard loss. Ryan Rubio brought down receiver Isayah Johnson on second down for no gain. On third down, Scheib pulled down quarterback Nick Maston for a four-yard loss. The Warriors fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 1:47 left in the game."I think we shot ourselves in the foot in the second half," said Warrior head coach Matt Seneca. "That's all me with the offensive play calls. I thought we controlled the entire game in the first half. I let my players down with the play calls in the second half. I could have done a lot better job of that. They didn't do anything to us that we didn't expect."The Warriors took the early lead with a nine-play drive that culminated with Labatch's 28-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs almost had them stopped near midfield, but a roughing the punter kept the drive alive.Northern Lehigh answered with an eight-play touchdown drive that ended with a two-yard Nate Farber run and his two-point conversion run gave his team an 8-7 lead.Wilson took a 15-8 lead late in the first half on a nine-play drive that was all Labatch runs. He scored on a nine-yard scamper with 1:33 left in the second quarter. Mike Fabian fell on a fumble in the end zone to secure the two-point conversion. After the Bulldogs closed the gap after the fake punt, they forced a three-and-out then put together the game-winning drive, which included a 30-yard completion from quarterback Chad Cederberg to Brandon Smith. Nate Farber capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown run.Northern Lehigh has already equalled last season's win total."We won two games last year," said Tout. "We're 2-1 right now. We're happy with our progress."
