No suspects in troopers' shooting; names released

Police have no suspects in the fatal shooting Friday night of a state trooper at the Blooming Grove, Pike County state police barracks.

The ambush attack left Cpl. Bryon Dickson dead and Tpr. Alex T. Douglass critically wounded. The officers were leaving the barracks during a shift change at about 10:50 p.m. when they were shot."It's a cowardly attack. It's an attack on all of us in society, and the people of Pennsylvania," State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said Saturday at a streaming news conference televised on several news stations. "Pennsylvania state police and law enforcement in general will not rest until this individual is apprehended."Dickson had transferred from the Philadelphia barracks just months before, Noonan said.Dickson, who leaves behind a wife and two young sons, had graduated from the police academy in Hershey in 2007, and started his career at Troop N, Hazleton., before being assigned to Philadelphia.Douglass has undergone surgery, but remains in critical condition."This is unbelievably heartbreaking to all of us. Both of them were young troopers, with families," Noonan said.Noonan would not release details of the investigation, but said police have no suspects. He said the attack appears to have targeted police. All state police barracks in Pennsylvania have been put on high alert, Noonan said."We have a very dangerous, armed criminal who has killed one Pennsylvania state trooper and wounded another, and who is not in custody. This attack was directed specifically at law enforcement," he said. However, he said people who see anything out of the ordinary to call the Honesdale barracks at 570-253-7126, or call 1-800-4-PA-TIPS.Earlier, a be-on-the-lookout notice from state police was circulated among news organizations and social media. Noonan said the notice was never meant to be released to the public. It advised police to watch for a Jeffrey Hudak, and described his vehicles, giving the license numbers. It also included a photo of Hudak, and said he was wanted for questioning, advising police to "use extreme caution" and to detain him.Hudak was interviewed by police Saturday morning. He is not in custody.State police, through Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers, are offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.A massive land and air manhunt was immediately launched, with state police from New Jersey and New York helping. Although police believe the shooter is no longer in the vicinity, they will continue a "strong presence" in the rural, wooded area surrounding the Blooming Grove barracks, Noonan said.
