Strong finishes propel Thorpe

Consistency and communication are vital components of any successful team.

Both Jim Thorpe coach Erin Kuhn and Tamaqua coach Stacy Selock explained that it's been a season-long effort to improve in those two areas.Jim Thorpe proved to be a bit more consistent in the Schuylkill League match up between the two sqauds as the Olympians were victorious, 25-8, 25-12, 25-14."When we're losing sometimes the girls get down on themselves," said Kuhn. "I always tell them to keep up the communication and intensity. We had a big talk today about that."We need to continue working on our communication in order to be successful."The Olympians dominated the first game. However, the Raiders bounced back and held an early lead in game two."I switched it up tonight. I used the same girls but I put them in different positions," Setlock said. "I gave myself some more room to use substitutions."Even when we weren't messing up, I kept trying to switch things up to get some different looks on the court."A short time after the second game was tied at 6-6, Riley Carroll of Jim Thorpe did a great job of serving and helped the Olympians gain control again. Jim Thorpe ended the second game on a run of 9-0.The strong closing run was a pattern that held up the entire match. The Olympians also pulled away late in the third game, using a 8-1 run to finish Tamaqua off. Thorpe also had used a 7-1 tear to close out the opening game."We've been on and off this year," Kuhn explained. "We start off slow, pick it up, and end up slow again. We have a young team that is continuing to learn. We have some older girls, but some of our starters are freshman and they will continue to grow. Overall, I think everyone played great tonight."Setlock wants her Raiders to focus on one specific aspect of the game in order for her squad to become more consistent."We have some good days and some bad days," noted the Tamaqua coach. "Right now our passing is our weakness. Once we get our passing down we'll be fine. We know how to pass, set, and hit we just need to bring it all together."Despite the loss, Kaelyn Boran was a Tamaqua standout who contributed nine assists and five digs.Setlock explained, "When the girls are happy and loose out there, they play a little better."The Olympian victory is the team's third overall and first in Schuylkill League play."Everyone played well tonight compared to the games we played earlier this week," Kuhn said. "We started out slow in some of our other games and tonight we truly picked up our intensity."I think the girls are great and I love them. I've been with them every week since April and we have a ton of fun. The girls know when to have fun and when to be serious."
