Every good mechanic knows his or her own tools down to each and every scratch. So when Marie Morgan, manager of Lehigh Tire in Tamaqua, saw a familiar "face" for sale on a Facebook page, she knew immediately it was one of her missing babies and contacted Tamaqua patrolman Anthony Stanell.
Stanell then contacted the seller, who was most cooperative, providing the information police needed to get a search warrant for the home and garage where the woman says she picked up the tools. That garage is located at 21 Spruce St., Tamaqua, attached to an apartment rented by Thomas Kehl, 24.By 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, police were at Kehl's door, which he refused to open. With search warrant in hand, officers forced their way inside and arrested Kehl. There were no tools visible in the apartment, but the garage turned out to be a treasure trove. Scattered across the floor and stacked against the walls were hundreds of hand tools, air tools, cabinets, repair manuals and the vast majority of items taken during the Sunday burglary at Lehigh Tire.Officers also found the items stolen from All American Jeep, which just happened to be parts that could be used for the red Jeep parked in the garage.Morgan and John and Lynn Sanzi of the Jeep dealership were contacted. The broad smiles on the trio's faces as they identified their property were all that was needed to confirm the stash came from the burglaries.Morgan actually cradled some of her "babies" in her arms, saying "Christmas came early this year."As officers inventoried the tools as evidence, Morgan named each item, claiming some as her own, while others belonged to co-worker Charlie Franz or the company. All in all, she determined there were only a few items missing, and guessed they had already been sold.Following the inventory, most of the items were returned to Lehigh Tire and All American Jeep.Kehl was arraigned before District Magistrate David Platchko on multiple felony charges of burglary, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $50,000. Unable to post the 10 percent bond, he was lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.Anyone who may have bought a tool from Kehl between Sunday and Wednesday is asked to contact Tamaqua Police at 570-668-5000.
