A former Lehighton Area School District teacher and golf coach has been charged with a misdemeanor count of corruption of minors after admitting to sending sexually oriented text messages to a 16-year-old boy, police say.
Matthew Kyle Fisher, 32, of Lehighton, was charged Aug. 21 by Lehighton state trooper Nicholas De La Iglesia and mailed a summons. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Oct. 8.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by state police at Lehighton with District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford, Fisher was teaching in the district when he developed a friendship with the boy. The two exchanged text messages between July 28 and Aug. 5.Two of the texts involved Fisher asking the boy to engage in a sexual contest with him and then text him with the results.Lehighton borough officer Joseph Lawrence interviewed the boy on Aug. 5, and the boy told him what happened. Lawrence then took photos of the messages. De La Iglesia interviewed the boy on Aug. 13, and the boy told him the same thing. On Aug. 16, trooper Joseph Campbell of the Lehighton barracks interviewed Fisher, who admitted he sent the messages.Fisher was still employed by the school district as of July. However, a staff directory search for Fisher on the district's website failed to find his name.School Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said he could neither confirm nor deny the allegations, and would not comment on the matter, saying it is a personnel issue.
