Raiders top PHS

In any sport, a good contest filled with impressive plays often is overshadowed by what happens at the end a grand slam, a hail Mary pass, a mid-field basket.

On Saturday, when Tamaqua played Palmerton in a non-league, boys' soccer game, it was a power play in the closing minutes that gave the Raiders a 3-2 win. After Tamaqua tied the game early in the second half, the two teams battled for about 35 minutes with neither able to penetrate the net. Then, the Raiders got the ball in the Palmerton corner. A two-pass play got the ball to sophomore Tyler Hollanbach. The midfielder was at his right corner of the penalty stroke line. He blasted it past the Palmerton goalie with only about 1:38 left in the game.It was an excellent comeback effort for Tamaqua, and their first win in four games.Palmerton (0-4) jumped to a 2-0 lead early but Tamaqua's offense, although it had difficulty scoring, proved to be more effective. Both teams are young, with Palmerton having only four seniors and five juniors, while Tamaqua has five seniors and three juniors.Coach Ian Blyth of Tamaqua praised Palmerton for its determined effort, noting that Tamaqua had 21 shots on goal compared to seven for Palmerton. It was a 12-4 shot advantage at halftime."If you connect with 25 percent of those shots, you should be ahead with a 4-1 lead," Blyth said. One reason Tamaqua didn't score more was because of the incredible job done by Palmerton goal temder Rich Roselli, a senior..Roselli had 11 saves in the game. Some of the most impressive happened after Tamaqua knotted the game at 2-2 and quickly marched downfield to gain the lead.Tamaqua co-captain Ben Miller kicked a ferocious kick in a scoring attempt that Roselli caught.Moments later, sophomore Logan Miller kicked a cannonball to the goal. It bounced off the chest of Roselli. The tough goalie still wasn't done. Ben Miller got the rebound and fired another hard shot that looked to be a score, only to have it snagged by Roselli.Palmerton Coach Ryan Sharkazy recognized Roselli's effort. "Rich has been the backbone of the team," he said. "He is always on his toes and always ready to make a play."Sharkazy also praised sweeper Harley Appelbaum, "who did an excellent job keeping the guys in check in the back," and senior forward Stefano Tangero, who scored the Bombers' first goal, and has now had goals in two straight games. For Tamaqua, captain Josh Delp got some good marks from Coach Blyth. "He got a goal that made the score 2-1 and made it easier to get back into the game," Blyth said. The winning coach continued, "Really, it was a team effort. In a 3-2 win, there's no outstanding player."Tangero put Palmerton up 1-0 a little past the midway point of the first half. He took a pass from Jesse Dekorte and took an up-close shot from his right side.Later in the half, Devon Santos booted a straight-line kick from about 20-feet out to make it 2-0, with Palmerton winning.Six minutes into the second half, Ben Miller tied it with a straight-on shot.Blyth explained another reason the Raiders might have been victorious. He said in the last game against Pottsville, his squad was called for 32 fouls. Against Palmerton, they were called for just five fouls."They're a young team like ours," Blyth said of Palmerton. "They're not going to be pushed around by anybody."For Tamaqua, Delp and Ben Miller both had seven shots on goal.Roselli had 13 saves for Palmerton.

ron gower/times news Tamaqua's Thorn Devlin, left, keeps ball away from Palmerton's Stefano Tangero.
