Northwestern shuts out Bangor
The Bangor Slaters threw a few offensive wrinkles at Northwestern Friday night, but the staunch Tigers defense ironed out those wrinkles in a 41-0 win over the Slaters to move to 2-0 on the season.
After throwing the ball just seven times in their opening week win over Catasauqua, Bangor put the ball in the air 20 times, but completed just seven passes and were picked off three times by the Northwestern defense. Most of the yardage that Bangor was able to pick up came in the second-half when coach Josh Snyder had pulled many of his defensive starters and Slaters coach Don Hawk had also subbed out almost his entire first unit."We've got a bunch of those run-stoppers in there and coach Hippensteel, the defensive coordinator and the coaches put a great defensive alignment in against that single-wing," explained Snyder."We hadn't practiced much against the pass, because they just haven't shown it and they hit some nice passes to move the sticks a little bit, but our defense kept them out of the end zone."Offensively, it didn't take Northwestern long to get started. Bangor won the toss, but deferred to the second half, which proved to be a mistake when Harry Hall took the first play from scrimmage at his own 23 and didn't stop until he was in the end zone, knocking off a 77-yard touchdown run.Northwestern got the ball back with 9:34 left in the quarter and scored in just four plays with Hall picking up another 54 yards on the ground on two carries and Cam Richardson pushing it across the goal line from a yard out to give Northwestern two scores on two possessions."Our offensive line is really coming together and those guys let us take advantage of whatever the other team gives us and tonight," said Snyder. "We just went right at them and our line opened holes."Hall would go on to pick up 165 yards rushing in the first half, adding a 17-yard TD run in the second quarter. With the Tigers leading 27-0 late in the half, Frank Dangello unloaded on a 38-yard strike to Richardson for a touchdown. Brandon Miller again added the extra point and the Tigers were up 34-0 at the half. The first-team defense for Northwestern has thrown a shutout in each of the first two games."We had it [the shutout] last week, until their first-team offense got our JV guys late in the game, but those guys came out tonight and played really hard and they were determined not to have that happen again," said Hall. While Bangor threw 20 times, none of those passes came in the second-half. Instead, the Slaters went to the ground game and kept things relatively simply with many of their young players taking over.Among the young players who saw time for Northwestern, sophomore Tyler Foster stood out, gaining 36 yards on five carries, one of which was a four-yard touchdown run for Northwestern's final score of the night.Sophomores Dalton Webster and Ryan Hippensteel had 13 and 11 yards rushing, respectively on the night."Foster's a good player, but he's behind some really good players as a sophomore," said Snyder. "On that drive coming out in the second half, Bangor made some changes on defense, so we got some guys in there and it was nice to see him come out there and run like he did."He made some things happen and I'm happy that he got into the end zone."
