Moyer leads Raiders' assault

Since coach Sam Bonner took over the Tamaqua football program, there has been no secret to the style of play he prefers.

Every week the Raiders look to establish a running game between the tackles and make sure that its physical presence on the defensive side of the ball is known.Tamaqua's 284-yard performance on the ground combined with a few huge fourth quarter stops helped propel the Raiders past Schuylkill Valley, 25-6 on Friday night. The two teams were both involved in lopsided contests last week.Schuylkill Valley was coming off of a 40-6 rout of Susquenita in which it manufactured 436 total yards and no turnovers. However, the Panthers didn't execute nearly as well in the contest against the Raiders this week."We made uncharacteristic mistakes tonight," said Schuylkill Valley head coach Jeff Chillot. "We didn't have any turnovers last week and on our first drive tonight we went right down the field and coughed up the ball in the red zone."Schuylkill Valley star tailback Ed Shuttleworth ran for 82 yards on the ground, but committed yet another Panther turnover in the second quarter. On the very next play following the Shuttleworth fumble, Tamaqua junior running back Bud Moyer ripped off a monster 74-yard touchdown run to extend the Tamaqua lead to 12-0. Moyer racked up 230 yards, three touchdowns, and recorded an interception during the contest."Bud's run before half gave our team a huge boost," explained Bonner. "Besides that carry, he really earned a ton of his yards out there. We knew we were going to ride him toward the end of the game and he definitely did a great job."Both head coaches noted that they insisted on sticking with their game plans heading into the third period regardless of the score. However, Chillot explained that his squad didn't take advantage of the field position that it frequently had in the second half."Nobody panicked and I told the kids to go out there and keep doing what they were," said Chillot. "We had the ball within Tamaqua's 30-yard line twice in the fourth quarter and we couldn't do anything with it."The Raiders were also in a contest last week that was decided by a few scores. However Tamaqua was on the losing side of the spectrum as it gave up 357 yards of total offense in a loss to North Schuylkill. That being said, Bonner's squad looked like a revived defensive unit just seven days later. The defense recovered two fumbles, had an interception, and stepped up late in the game to stuff the Panthers in Raider territory on two separate occasions."I thought we did a pretty good job against their challenging zone-read style of offense," said Bonner. "It takes a disciplined defense to stop that style of play and we managed well against it."The Panthers scored late in the game, but Moyer answered the call once more as he had a 20-yard scamper to the house with just under two minutes to play. The touchdown essentially put the game away as the scoreboard flashed 25-6 in favor of the home team. The Raiders held the ball for much of the second half including a six minute drive in the third quarter."We were moving the ball well and we stuck with that in the second half," said Bonner. "We had some great blocks from our tackles and fullbacks. Obviously, we aren't going to be able to do this every week. We need to get better in certain areas and improve every day."
