JT 'swarms' Shenandoah

Last night was an all together feel good atmosphere at Olympian Stadium as Jim Thorpe improved its early season record to 2-0 with a dominating 46-0 victory over Shenandoah Valley.

JT head coach Mark Rosenberger, who celebrates a birthday today, was presented with his 100th career coaching victory by his team. Another high mark of accomplishment was the performance by senior quarterback, Shane Snisky, who missed all of last season. Snisky threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns in spearheading the Olympian offense which totaled 460 yards on the night. After a Ryan Carroll interception, Thorpe scored on its first possession in just two plays. Junior Robert Heller broke off a 16-yard run to the JT 39 yard line before Snisky found senior Alex Steigerwalt on a deep post pattern for a 61-yard TD pass. Then after a Blue Devil three and out, the Olympians capped off a four-play drive with Heller's 21-yard TD scoring scamper around the left end. Heller, who gained 103 yards in the game, now has a two-game total of 251 yards with three touchdowns.Thorpe's "red swarm" defense continued its domination and is unscored upon in all eight quarters so far this season. Statistically, they have allowed only 11 first downs and 147 rushing yards in two games."Our kids are playing very physical and with a lot of passion," said Rosenberger. "Having had such success so far, we still have things to work on defensively before we play some real strong opponents coming up on our schedule."Early in the second quarter, Carroll split the secondary and hooked up with Snisky on a 34-yard scoring strike to give JT a 20-0 lead."We had success with the passing game because we thought their secondary was pinching up and Shane was able to hit a couple of deep throws," said Rosenberger.Snisky shared his elation about what the personal side of his team's victory meant to him."Last year I could not play at all due a to a back problem, but it was more painful for me to watch all the games from the stands," said Snisky. "I was hungry to get back on the field so I worked really hard in the offseason and so far it has been paying off."Shenandoah Valley had trouble all night sustaining offensive drives. The Blue Devils had five turnovers and five costly penalties."We kept shooting ourselves in the foot," said coach Michael Reese. "Whenever we started to move the ball, fumbles and penalties killed us. And we couldn't keep our defense off the field."Heller highlighted a six-play drive late in the second quarter with a 13-yard TD run up the middle that put Thorpe up by 26 at the half.To begin the third quarter, Heller ran the kickoff for 43 yards to the Blue Devil 42-yard line. Three plays later, sophomore Antonio Madera slanted off right tackle, then broke to the left and outran Valley's secondary for a 33-yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter, with the second straight game of a mercy rule in effect for JT, Dean Richards replaced Snisky at quarterback and led his offense on an eight-play scoring drive that ended with his four-yard keeper.Jim Thorpe then finished its scoring with a 47-yard drive paced by the running of freshman Justin St. Hill and an eight-yard TD run by freshman Rudy Forman. On achieving his milestone victory, Rosenberger passed along the credit over his 16 years at the helm of Olympian football."These 100 wins belong to all the dedicated coaches and great players I have had the good fortune to be with over all these years," he said.Next week Rosenberger hopes to start his move toward 200 wins as his Olympians host Tamaqua.
