Lights upgrade at 911 center, probation office

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday took the first step in upgrading the lighting at the 911 center and the adult probation office.

Commissioners chose McClure, of Harrisburg, to develop the scope of work and the contract for the lighting retrofits over the other company vying for the job.Chairman Frank Staudenmeier said the county has worked with McClure on other projects and is confident in its abilities. This initial part of the project will not cost the county any money, said county engineer Lisa Mahall.By the time it's finished in either December or January, the cost of the upgrades is expected to be about $50,000 to $60,000, she said.Commissioners on July 23 agreed to seek proposals for the project, which would guarantee cost savings on the county's electrical bills by changing out the lighting in the buildings. In 2008, the county did a similar project for its prison, nursing home and courthouse, saving a total of $69,200 as of 2012.Last year, the county obtained a $48,484 matching grant through the North Eastern Pennsylvania Alliance for energy efficient upgrades and retrofits to the 911 and adult probation buildings.Commissioners opened bids for the repair of a bridge in West Brunswick Township.Bidders are Deblin Inc. of Mechanicsburg, with a base bid of $385,145 and an alternate bid of $412,863, Descco, Fleetwood, with a base bid of $473,943, and an alternate bid of $448,823; Heim Construction of Orwigsburg, with a base bid of $492,081 and an alternate bid of $415,031; and Ryland Construction of York, with a base bid of $490,719 and an alternate bid of $446,992.Commissioners expect to award the bids when they meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10.
