Eldred moves forward with elementary
Eldred Township is getting an additional 30 days from the Pleasant Valley School District to complete all the inspections on the former Eldred Elementary School before it takes ownership.
Township solicitor Michael Kaspszyk reported that he has been negotiating with the district on the reverter issue. An inspection of the underground fuel tank will be conducted Friday. Radon testing is discretionary, Kaspszyk said."Everything's in the works," he said.Supervisor Mary Anne Clausen said she believes a radon test should be done. Supervisor/secretary Sharon Solt said that she asked a commercial real estate agent and was told it wasn't necessary.Resident Archie Craig said, "It wouldn't hurt to have a radon test. We had my mom's house tested and it showed radon."Kaspszyk said that a radon test kit could be purchased at a Home Depot for $56."If it shows levels, you can then have a more thorough testing done. But I'm more concerned about the septic. I'd have it pumped," he said. The supervisors agreed to get radon test kits for the school.Resident Debbie Watts asked about the YMCA, which is the Eldred Elementary School's tenant.Gretchen Gannon-Pettit said they talked about the Y expanding programs, maybe utilizing a couple more rooms, at an increase. Lockers, air conditioning and a wall expansion could be done, all at the Y's expense.Solt suggested hiring Michelle Bisbing, a grant writer, for $500 and 5 percent of the grant money, to write a grant for $100,000 from the Local Share Account to be used in any work needed for the school. The board approved it 3-0.Solt said it would cost $150 to attend a grant writing seminar and she would like to attend it.Clausen said, "We just talked about hiring a grant writer at $500. Now you want to send someone to a seminar at $150 but it will cost more than that until it's done. Gas, mileage. It could go up to $300. It seems to me that the financial accounting gets sloppy here."The board voted 2-1 in favor of Solt attending the seminar, with Clausen casting the dissenting vote. The board voted, 3-0:• To change the township insurance company from the current EMC at a cost of $27,949 a year to PIRMA at $31,387, an increase of $3,438 because EMC would not insure the old Kunkletown post office building. PIRMA will include fire and lightning and allow $250,000 debris removal if the old post office were to be destroyed by fire or lightning. Helen Mackes of the Eldred Township Historical Society, said to date, $117,000 has been spent on the renovations of the old Kunkletown post office building. None of it was funded by taxpayers.• To write a letter of support to the West End Fair Association to apply for grants to build an addition to its office building. In other business, Clausen thinks the township should explore the health care insurance market for better coverage for its employees.
