Panther Valley gains win in volleyball

Panther Valley opened its volleyball season Saturday with a victory over Weatherly.

Other local teams to post recent wins include Tamaqua tennis, Pleasant Valley field hockey, Northern Lehigh and Northwestern boys soccer, and Palmerton and Lehighton girls soccer.VOLLEYBALLPine Grove TournamentBlue Mountain downed Northwestern twice in pool play, by scores of 27-26, 25-15, in the Cardinal Clash at Pine Grove, then went on to defeated the Tigers 25-22 to win the championship.The losses to Blue Mountain, were the only ones Northwestern suffered.Pius X beat Tamaqua 25-17 in the quarterfinal round, Northwestern beat Northern Lebanon 25-12 and Pine Grove stopped Lehighton 26-24.Northwestern also beat Nativity 25-22 in the semifinals.Weatherly-Panther ValleyPanther Valley swept Weatherly, 25-18, 25-17, 25-8 in a Schuylkill League match.Jamey Mikovich had a strong game at the net for the Panthers (1-0) with 11 kills. She also added seven digs. Also playing well for Panther Valley were Jessica Wiese (10 service points, six digs, five kills, three aces); Kelsey Van Horn (10 assists, nine service points, six aces, five kills); and Cara Hoffman (12 services points, five aces).In the JV match, Weatherly picked up a 25-14, 15-25, 26-24 win.Bethlehem Freedom TourneyMarian fared well in the Bethlehem Freedom Volleyball Tournament, as they finished in third place in the morning pool, while tying for first in the afternoon pool.The Fillies dropped both sets to Berks Catholic, while splitting sets with both Red Lion and Upper Merion. In the afternoon, they swept both sets against Liberty, while splitting with Whitehall and Bethlehem Catholic.Abby O'Donnell led the way for Marian with 68 assists, seven kills and nine digs, Emily Pilla followed with 13 kills, eight assists, six aces and 33 digs, with Abigail Stankiewicz recording 24 kills and three blocks. Maureen Kloap was also a force with 27 kills and 22 digs, Jasmine Mooney compiled 12 kills and six digs, while Lauren Nietz had 34 digs and Alex Stroia had 23 digs.FIELD HOCKEYLehighton-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley received a hat trick from Annie Butchkoski to gain a 6-1 non-league win over Lehighton.Butchkoski finished with three goals and two assists.
