Haven pulls away from PV

Schuylkill Haven head coach Mike Farr always worries when he has to play Panther Valley at the PV Stadium.

For three quarters on Friday night, Farr was still waiting for his Hurricanes to take control against first year head coach Matt Davis' Panthers. And they did. Will Casella scored four of Haven's five touchdowns on the night and helped his team pull away from the Panthers for a 34-12 in the Anthracite Football League opener for both."They (the Panthers) were playing tough," said Farr, whose team had a seven-point lead entering the final quarter. "This is a tough place to play. We have success here, but we have these moments when we come here that were no different tonight. In that second quarter, things got going, we had breakdowns defensively and they got right back into the game. We didn't have a great game tonight."The turning point came in the final two minutes of the third quarter with the Panthers driving. Rian Shubeck was pushed out of bounds inside the Haven five-yard line on what would have been a first and goal, but it was nullified on a holding call in the PV backfield moving it back to the 45.On the next play, Brett Biever recovered a Panther fumble back on the 50 and the Hurricanes took over.Haven drove down to the Panther 16 as the quarter ended and Casella scored his third TD of the night on a 16-yard run eight seconds into the final stanza. He also ran in for the two-point conversion giving his team a 27-12 advantage. The Panthers didn't quit, however, and drove down to the Haven 20 after starting a 16-play drive back on their own 32. They came up empty after a couple of penalties and QB Ali Capobianco, who had a decent night, being sacked on fourth down on the Haven 40.The Hurricanes took over and Casella broke loose on a 60-yard run with Jason Trumbo booting the PAT ending the scoring at 34-12 with 5:48 remaining."We are obviously never happy with a loss," said David afterwards. "But Schuylkill Haven knew early on that they were in one and we wanted our kids to play for four quarters and they did. We're going to try and build our program to simulate what Haven is like year in and year out. You can see the weight room took over late in the game."Davis was happy with the way Capobianco handled himself in his first game as the PV starting quarterback."He did a good job," Davis said. "We had a quarterback battle in the pre-season and he got the start tonight. Our backup didn't get in which means he did a good job for us."Our kids responded every time. We held them before the end of the half and every time they scored we answered. OUr kids never gave up, they fought until the end and that's all we could ask for."Haven scored on its first possession of the game on a seven-yard run by Biever.Casella recovered a fumble on the PV 30 and wen two yards for his first TD of the game giving the Hurricanes a 13-0 lead with 3:55 still left in the first quarter. The Panthers kept things in check the rest of the first half as Matt Buss recovered a Haven fumble on the PV 48 to stop one drive and then Chris Santore came up with a big sack on a fourth down play with the Hurricanes at the Panther 30 to give the ball back to PV.With 1:31 left in the half, Capobianco hooked up with Cee Keo for a 28 yard TD and the Panthers trailed 13-6 at intermission.Casella scored on a four-yard run in the early moments of the third quarter, but Capobianco ran one in on an 11-yard keeper to keep the Panthers within a touchdown at the 5:38 mark."We should have been up four touchdowns in the first half but we didn't execute," said Farr. "I told everybody the coach (Davis) is a good coach and his kids believe in him. That program is going to do a lot of great things in the next couple of years."
