Park Avenue project is nearing completion

The Park Avenue project in Nesquehoning is entering its final phase.

During the borough council meeting on Wednesday, officials accepted the low bid for the paving of Park Avenue between Stock Street (Route 54) and Fourth Avenue in the Hauto Valley Estates portion of the borough. Bruce George Paving and Excavating Inc. of Kunkletown submitted the low bid of $269,539.07.The paving portion of the project is expected to begin in mid-September.Councilman Don DeMarco said that the company may not be able to do the top coat of the paving due to the upcoming changes in the season."Everything else will be done," he said, noting that if the top coat is done too close to cold weather, it may compromise the integrity of it.The Park Avenue project has been in the works since last July, when council hired Penn Earthworks Inc. of Beaver Meadows for the storm sewer drainage part of the project at a cost of $71,550.Ground was broken in October 2013, but delayed until April because of a wild winter.Following the completion of the storm sewer drainage, council hired Michael Radocha at a cost of $5,340 to replace current cross drainage pipes that had deteriorated.Residents in the area were then responsible to purchase curbing along the edges of their properties.Currently, Stempa Excavating of Nesquehoning is completing the curbing work and is expected to be done within the next two weeks, DeMarco said.In other matters, council announced that trash pickup for the borough, as well as the Estates and Lake Hauto, will be on Wednesdays, per the new contract with Tamaqua Transfer. The contract takes effect in October. No tires, televisions or appliances will be accepted as trash, the six bag limit will remain, and the bulk pickup day will be in the first week of the month. An electronics recycling event is scheduled for Oct. 23 at the borough hall, 114 W. Catawissa St. The event, operated by Responsible Recycling Services, will run from 2 to 5 p.m.
