Seven first-time offenders placed in probation program

Seven first-time offenders in the criminal justice system were placed in Carbon County's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition program on Tuesday by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

If a person successfully completes all conditions of the program, their record is wiped clean. However, if they fail to complete it, or are revoked from it, they will then face trial on all pending charges. A person does not admit guilt in entering the program.All were placed for a year, unless otherwise noted.Joshua James Daniels, 21, of Beaver Meadows, was placed on a charge of possession of a controlled substance-marijuana. He was arrested on Feb. 22 along Church Street by Beaver Meadows police.He was assessed $450 for the cost of the program and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render 50 hours of community service.Margaret Marie Keller, 29, of Lansford, was placed on various drug counts including manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.Matika said he was hesitant to place her in the program because of the charges but agreed after learning the arresting agent from the attorney general's office agreed to the placement.She was placed for two years and assessed $650 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation, and render 100 hours of community service.Jude W. Lauer, 44, of Kelayres, was placed on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested in the 300 block of East Catawissa Street by Nesquehoning police.He was assessed $450 and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Michael Daniel Madry, 21, of Mountain Top, was placed on a driving under the influence charge. He was arrested on Jan. 1 along Lake Drive in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge. Given a test, the result was 0.06 BAC. He was under 21 at the time.He was assessed $450, licensed suspended for 90 days, and must render 50 hours of community service.Megan C. Nocek, 28, of Albrightsville, was placed on a charge of simple assault. She was arrested on Dec. 29, 2013, for an incident at the Pocono Tap House, Albrightsville, with Tammie Grindle, the listed victim.She was assessed $650, ordered to render 50 hours of community service, and have no contact with Grindle.Greg Matthew Shafer, 19, of Weatherly, was placed on a charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police. He was arrested on May 13 along Wilbur Street, by Weatherly police.He was assessed $450 and ordered to render 50 hours of community service.Joanne J. Szymanski-McCray, 53, of Kunkletown, was placed on a DUI charge. She was arrested on Feb. 6 along Blakeslee Boulevard Drive by Mahoning Township police. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.She was assessed $650 and had her license suspended for 60 days.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average about $1,500, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while in the program.
