Keeping Sunday Holy

The ecumenical group, Keeping Sunday Holy, was formed to try to impact the community and create an awareness that Sundays are days for persons to reconnect with families after a busy week in school and work and to be nourished spiritually.That group includes the following churches and where they can be reached: McMichael's United Methodist, 570-629-1136; Mountaintop Christian Community Church 570-801-7131; Neola United Methodist 570-992-3878; New Covenant World Outreach 570-992-4996; Our Lady Queen of Peace 610-681-6137; and Pleasant Valley Presbyterian 570-992-0158.The group's tent will be at the West End Fair Aug. 26 and 28.The Keep Sunday Holy Team will meet at 7:30 p.m. at Sept. 16 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, using the office side entry. Others are invited if interested in adding a voice to this ecumenical group.Running for goodBrenda Davis of Effort, a volunteer of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, is involved with Team in Training.She hopes to participate in the Philadelphia Half Marathon on Nov. 23, in memory of her husband Bob, who died last year after three bouts with cancer.For more information or to support her contact the chapter office at 610-238-0360.Ambulance auxiliaryThe West End Ambulance is seeking volunteers to form an auxiliary to help support the operational needs of the organization. Participants are reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages will be provided.League meetingThe West End Little League will hold its next meeting tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Park Building. Work bonds can be picked up from 7 to 8:15 p.m.Food Resource CenterThe Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC, a ministry for feeding those in need in the West End region of the Poconos, sponsored by the church, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.The church helps help feed families going through emergency or other short-term situations that are not eligible for local, county or state programs and is limited to a 12-week duration per family. A valid driver's license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.Library movie timeThe Western Pocono Community Library holds movie time each Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The movie this Saturday will be: "Catching Fire" (PG-13). Movies are shown in the Community Room. Children under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult.For more information call 570-992-7934.Community mealsOur Lady Queen of Peace Church's next community meal in McCawley Hall will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, as well as at 4:30 every Tuesday and Thursday.Student breakfastNew Pleasant Valley students, in kindergarten through sixth grade, will have a welcome breakfast at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School.Special programThe Chestnuthill Seniors, a group within the Monroe Seniors, meeting at Zion Lutheran's Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville, will have a special presentation at 11:15 a.m. next Wednesday entitled "Eating Gourds (Summer Squash)."That group meets at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.Blood drivePleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Cherry Hill and Warren Lanes, Brodheadsville, will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 5. Among them are Effort UMC, where the service begins at 6 p.m.; Zion Lutheran, with a service at 5 p.m., which includes Holy Communion; and Our Lady Queen of Peace, where Mass is offered 5 p.m., but also at 8 a.m. in the morning.Bishop to visitThe Bishop of the local United Methodist churches, the Rev Peggy Johnson, will be visiting McMichaels United Methodist Church and speaking during the worship on Sept 7. A reception will be held after the service.
