Man gets state prison term for multiple DUI convictions

A Carbon County man, who has been jailed in the past for showing up at the courthouse under the influence of alcohol, was sentenced to a state prison term after pleading guilty to three pending driving under the influence charges, bringing his conviction total for DUIs to seven.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II sentenced Andrew Kressler, 45, of East Penn Township, Lehighton, to serve a total of 18 to 60 months in a state prison on three DUI counts.Kressler has had several run-ins with law enforcement over the past several months, most of them tied to alcohol. On Friday, Nanovic asked Kressler if he feels he has an alcohol problem, to which the defendant responded, "I don't think so."Kressler was brought to court from the county jail, where he has been an inmate since his latest arrest by state police on harassment and related counts. He also has appeared at the courthouse under the influence of alcohol on at least two occasions. On Jan. 17, he appeared at the adult probation office for an appointment under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for disorderly conduct and jailed. On May 22, he appeared in courtroom two on the third floor of the courthouse to plead guilty to the conduct charge before Judge Joseph J. Matika. He was under the influence at that time and found in contempt of court and jailed again.Kressler said he had been off alcohol for a long period of time but had a "relapse."Nanovic told Kressler he was sending him to a state prison because of his record of drunken driving and also said that the state system is better equipped to deal with his obvious alcohol abuse problem. He pleaded to one DUI for an incident on July 4, 2013, near his home. In that case he refused a test.He pleaded to another DUI, on Oct. 12, 2013, also near his residence. When state police at Lehighton arrived concerning a complaint about Kressler drinking and driving, he ran from his vehicle. Troopers found him hiding under a tarp behind his home. He again refused a test.He was arrested for the third DUI on March 29 along Route 248. He submitted to a breath test, which revealed a 0.20 BAC.In addition to the jail term, Kressler was ordered to pay a total of $6,000 in fines for the three DUIs, had his license suspended for a total of four years, must get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for D&A use, and pay court costs of about $1,500. He was given credit for 27 days spent in jail on the charges.
