The Tamaqua Area Water Authority has issued a water boil advisory for parts of Dutch Hill starting 4 a.m. Wednesday, July 30.

On Tuesday, affected residents in the Dutch Hill section received a two-page notice about the water boil advisory along with advice on how to handle the situation.The notice states:"We routinely monitor the conditions in the distribution system. On Monday, July 14, 2014, Water Authority personnel found a leak on the thirty-inch main in the area of Elm Street. The main was shut down on July 18 for temporary repairs."The Water Authority has hired a contractor to replace a full section of the main on Wednesday, July 30. Temporary service will again be provided by pumping water from the fire hydrant located at Market and Union streets to the hydrant at Union and Elizabeth streets."This may create conditions that could allow contamination to enter the distribution system. As a result, there is an increased chance that water may contain disease-causing organisms."Do not drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. You should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice."The notice states that bacteria, viruses and parasites can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches."After the section of pipe has been replaced and normal service has been restored, the system will be flushed and water samples will be taken. The water samples will be taken to an independent lab to be tested for bacteria," states the notice."We will inform you whn all corrective actions have been completed and when you no longer need to boil your water."It is unclear how long the boil advisory will remain in effect.Dutch Hill residents were impact by a previous water boil advisory from July 18 to July 21 due to the same issue.For more information, contact the Tamaqua Area Water Authority 570-668-0300 or the Still Creek Water Treatment Plant, 570-668-6319.
