Tamaqua man who hid in closet sentenced

A Tamaqua man who was found hiding in a closet in a borough home was sentenced to state time by a Schuylkill County judge.

Derek Shellhamer, 27, pleaded guilty to access device fraud, theft by deception and receiving stolen property. Judge James Goodman on July 3 sentenced him on the access device fraud charge to pay $443 in restitution to M&T Bank, and serve three months to two years in state prison.On the theft by deception charge, Goodman sentenced him to a year of probation, to be served at the same time. The charge of receiving stolen property was dropped.Shellhamer must also pay court costs and fees.The charges stem from April 8, 2013, incident. Shellhamer was taken into custody by Tamaqua police on Nov. 10 on an outstanding warrant issued by the Schuylkill County Adult Probation office. Acting on a tip, they found him hiding in a closet at 307 Arlington St., which had been posted by the Tamaqua Code Enforcement Office with a no trespassing sign.Police found a basement door had been broken. A pat-down search found a metal spoon, waxed packing material and one half of a pill inscribed with the numbers 434 on Shellhamer.
