Coaldale man given prison term for fleeing and drunken driving

A Coaldale man was sentenced to a long county prison term Monday in Carbon County court after previously pleading guilty to fleeing or attempting to elude police, and three counts of driving under the influence.

Matthew Joseph McFarland, 21, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of eight to one day less 24 months in prison.McFarland was arrested on the fleeing charge and one DUI count on Dec. 22, 2012, by state police at Lehighton. He was observed driving erratically along Canal Street in Weissport. He refused to stop and fled. A short chase ensued.He finally stopped but exited his vehicle and fled on foot but was apprehended by troopers. Given a test, the result was 0.16 BAC.He was arrested for a second DUI on Feb. 6, 2013, along Route 209 in Towamensing Township at the state police barracks. McFarland came to the barracks on another matter and appeared under the influence. He was observed pulling into the lot by a trooper. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance-marijuana.He was charged with a third DUI on Feb. 18, 2013, along Route 248 in Franklin Township. He was observed operating a vehicle by a trooper who knew he was under suspension. A vehicle stop was made and McFarland was found to be under the influence. Given a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance-marijuana.He was ordered to pay fines totaling $2,300, license suspensions totaling two years, supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, and render a total of 125 hours of community service after he is paroled. He must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.He will begin the jail term at 8 a.m. on July 3.
