Shockers rout Hurricanes
There's no denying that the Franklin Township Shockers have high expectations for themselves.
The team is, after all, in first place in the Keystone Senior Babe Ruth West Division, and entered Friday night's game against the Franklin Township Hurricanes with a 13-2 record. So, a convincing 11-3 victory for the Shockers should be something to celebrate, right? Not quite. The winners pounded out 17 hits, but stranded 14 men on base, including leaving the bases loaded to end both the sixth and seventh innings. While satisfied with the victory, Shockers' coach Donnie Rehrig knows his team needs to capitalize on such scoring opportunities in the future."We left a small village (out there)," Rehrig said. "Early in the game, we were able to take advantage of their mistakes and put the ball in play. But there were times we just couldn't come up with the big hit."We did well in the earlier innings. But late in the game, we just couldn't get that two-out hit. We can't leave that many guys on base."The Shockers were able to make the most of five Hurricane errors in the first inning in building a 3-0 lead after one.The errors were a common theme for the Hurricanes, who made a total of 10 in the loss."The errors just killed us early," said Hurricanes' coach Dirk Pompa. "It was just very frustrating, and they were able to take advantage."The Shockers were able to pad their advantage in each of the next three innings, building a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Hurricanes finally got their offense going in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on the strength of two Shocker errors and Dave Everitt's two-run double. But the Shocker's Brady Niehoff settled down, holding the Hurricanes hitless in his final two innings before Taylor Daivd closed the door with a perfect seventh."Brady did a heck of a job out there," Rehrig said. "He was struggling a little bit with his command in the fourth, and we had a couple of mental mistakes. But he did a great job bouncing back from that."Niehoff also did well at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple, two singles and a run scored, and was quick to note the early offensive production gave him confidence on the mound."It's always good to be able to pitch in a comfort zone and have run support," Niehoff said. "I just tried to throw strikes and let the guys make plays behind me and hope for the best."Niehoff wasn't the only one doing damage at the plate. KJ Snerr and Joe Heery also had three hits, and the Shockers managed to score at least one run in all seven innings."They did an excellent job setting the table," Rehrig said. "We just have to keep that going. We hit some balls hard and had a few tough luck outs with the bases loaded. But all in all, I thought we played pretty well."While the expectations for each team in the postseason might be different, the opportunity to compete is one each is looking forward to, especially Rehrig."We just have to finish strong and not take games for granted," the coach said. "We just have to come ready to play from the start like we did tonight."FT Shockers 312 121 1 - 11 17 2FT Hurricanes 000 300 0 - 3 4 10Niehoff, Taylor David (7) and Snerr; Do. Pompa, Kaminski (4), B.
