Community health fair a 'win-win'

A community health fair is only as good as its vendors and the people who support it.

With more vendors on hand to provide free services to the public, it's no wonder the community health fair held Saturday at Palmerton Hospital was deemed a huge success by its organizers.Blue Mountain Health System teamed with the Palmerton Lions Club to host the event, which had about 30 vendors who gave out free health assessments, such as health screenings and chair massages. The public also had an opportunity to meet with representatives from the Blue Mountain Health System, as well as agencies from Carbon County and surrounding communities.Information and education on a variety of health-related topics and services were available, and businesses donated door prizes.A light lunch was provided to all participants.Kristin Kline, of Palmerton, said she came to the health fair to have an EKG done."I have good insurance," Kline said. "I think it's good for the people that don't have insurance."Mary Lou McGeehan, community education coordinator, added, "We had a lot more presenters, 30 of them, that brought in a lot more community members."Mark Green, treasurer of the Palmerton Lions Club, said the event is a win-win for both parties."It benefits the community," Green said. "They get to take advantage of the testing and free services available to them."Nick Hawkey, vice president of the Palmerton Lions Club, said about 100 individuals attended the event."The vendors are really happy with it," Hawkey said. "A lot of people I know, I asked them about it, and said they liked this one better."
