Hero's body returns home to Schuylkill County

At 12:52 p.m. Wednesday, a black Cadillac hearse with Delaware plates pulled into the parking lot of Lord-Bixler Funeral Home, 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville.

The atmosphere was cold, foggy and wet. The air, silent. But the moment wasn’t without fanfare.Undeterred by steady drizzle, more than 120 supporters lined the street and waved American flags to welcome home a war hero.The body Capt. Jason B. Jones, Orwigsburg, was accompanied by an entourage of both military and civilian honor guards, along with a parade of veterans, bikers, flag-decorated Corvettes and fire apparatus representing a wide region.Jones, a Green Beret, was killed June 2 in Afghanistan, the victim of small-arms fire; a case still under investigation.A graduate of Blue Mountain High School and U.S. Military Academy Military Academy, Jones was described by his mother as “Captain America,” a determined man who yearned to pursue a military career ever since age seven when he watched the movie “Top Gun.”See Thursday’s Times News for full details of Jones’s return to Schuylkill County.
