Slatington council president resigns

As of June 1, Slatington Borough Council President Daniel Stevens resigned his position on council, said Councilman David Schnaars at Monday night's borough council meeting.

"I don't know how many of you know … (but) just so you folks are all aware of that," Schnaars said.He said Stevens resigned because he applied for the position of borough manager, for which the borough has been advertising and accepting resumes for the past few months. It was late last fall that council began to seriously discuss the need for a borough manager, a position that has remained vacant since September 2010, mainly due to budget concerns.Later, Stevens said that he had handed in his resignation last month and that, after the council's executive session following last month's meeting, it had voted to accept it.He also said that council has 30 days from June 1 to appoint a new president. Meanwhile, Councilman Bryon Reed is serving as president pro tem."I resigned because I applied for the borough manager position," Stevens said. "Legally, I didn't have to resign in order to apply; however, I felt it was appropriate that I not be on council while they're considering me as an applicant."In other news, council voted 6-0 "to authorize the president or vice president to execute the contract with Glen G. Hale Inc., on the condition that all bonds, insurance and other contract requirements are resolved to the satisfaction of the solicitor and engineer."The contractor was last month awarded the East Washington Street road project, in the amount of $77,010, after a re-bid for it."We're close to a notice to proceed on that," said Borough Engineer Larry Turoscy. The 2013 Community Development Block Grant project will involve East Washington Street between First and Second streets. For the 2014 CDBG program, Reed said the borough hopes to extend the work on East Washington Street. Turoscy confirmed that all paperwork for that grant has been submitted. Also, because a donation of concrete meant that setting a Boy Scout monument along the Slate Heritage Trail, at the end of Willow Avenue, had cost less than was originally approved by council, Schnaars said the former Troop 65 members who had arranged for the move were wondering if council would allow them $100 to place a wooden frame and stone around the monument.Council approved the request.
