Schuylkill bank robbed, suspect being sought

A Schuylkill County bank was robbed Thursday afternoon by the same person who stole a car a few minutes earlier in a nearby community and used it in the robbery.

State police at Frackville said the robbery occurred at the National Penn Bank branch office in the Schuylkill Mall in New Castle Township.Troopers said a white male entered the bank about 3:10 p.m. and demanded money. Troopers said the suspect gestured consistent with him having a concealed firearm. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.The suspect was driving a silver Chrysler Cirrus, which police later learned he had stolen at the Turkey Hill Minit Market in Frackville minutes before the robbery. The suspect returned to Frackville, where troopers believe he attempted to rob an ATM at the Wells Fargo branch office on Altamont Boulevard. Troopers are not sure if this incident occurred before or after the mall robbery.The Chrysler was found abandoned on Frack Street in the borough. It is not known whether he had another vehicle waiting in the area where he abandoned the stolen vehicle.Troopers said the suspect was wearing a gray hoodie, gray sneakers and blue jeans along with a bandanna. It is estimated that he is 20-30 years of age, about 6 feet tall and of medium build.Numerous local police and law enforcement agencies assisted troopers from the Frackville and Schuylkill Haven barracks in a search for the suspect. Also called into service was a state police helicopter. Additionally, a dog furnished by Special Unit 66 of Lebanon, was brought to the location where the stolen car was recovered.The state police Troop L Records & Identification Unit, stationed in Reading, was also on scene.Troopers said the theft of the car is being handled by Frackville borough police.Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call troopers at 570-874-5300.
