County bridge will be closed for replacement

The bridge that spans Koch Road in Towamensing Township will be shut down for replacement from June 13 to Nov. 13.

Carbon County commissioners on Thursday announced the closure. The arched, single-lane bridge, built in 1916, spans Pohopoco Creek. Commissioners have been planning to repair or replace it since 1999, when a bus company expressed concerns about its safety. The $2 million project will be done by Fabcor Inc. of Jessup, Lackawanna County.Fabcor was the lowest bidder for the project, offering to do the construction work for $1.35 million. The bid did not include engineering fees.Commissioner William O'Gurek in May said the project will be 80 percent covered by the federal government and 20 percent by the state. However, the county still had to use more than $700,000 from its liquid fuels fund to pay for design work and acquiring six right-of-way approvals. It must also make sure the new bridge complies with Towamensing Township's historical requirements.
