Township says 'no' to Eldred school

Pleasant Valley School District made an offer hoping Eldred Township couldn't refuse.

But it did.The school district offered the Eldred Elementary School to the township for $1. But at Wednesday night's township supervisors' meeting, Supervisor/Secretary Sharon Solt said, "Unfortunately we are rejecting the generous offer."Solt said PVSD superintendent Carole Geary told the board that it cost the district $75,000 a year to maintain it. It currently has only one tenant, the Pocono Family YMCA with a monthly rent of $475."We thought even with our township workers maintaining the building, it would still cost the township $50,000 a year. It's appealing because it's close but we have other properties we have to maintain," said Vice Chairman Mary Ann Clausen. The board voted 2-0 to reject the offer. Supervisor Gretchen Gannon Pettit was absent.Michael Kaspszyk, the township solicitor, said, "They gave us a deadline to make a decision by June 5. I don't think we had enough time for due diligence. But it's not like we can't revisit it in the future, but with this deadline, it's not feasible."Clausen asked the audience if anyone had any suggestions of how the building could be used. One resident wondered if the township could obtain the Little League ball field that is located between the school and the township building."That would be a wonderful idea and one we will look into," Clausen said.
