Lansford gets help with access ramp

A handicapped access ramp project is moving forward in Lansford.

During the Carbon County Commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board approved an environmental review on the ramp project.Commissioner William O'Gurek said the county is partnering with Lansford to install the new ramp, which will be built at the entrances to the borough building and Lansford-Coaldale Joint Water Authority at 1 E. Ridge St.O'Gurek said Lansford has already obtained a grant for $25,000 for the project but needed more funding after council learned the size and cost of the project was larger than initially expected. The county is matching Lansford's grant with $40,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds. The project calls for removing the current steps and ramp leading up to the office entrances and installing a new ADA-approved ramp."We're happy to be a partner with Lansford to make things better for the people of the borough," O'Gurek said, adding that the borough hopes to begin the project this summer."This will help the people get in and out of the borough building easier," O'Gurek added.Commissioner Chairman Wayne Nothstein commended all the Eagle Scouts that the county has recently recognized. This week, the county signed a resolution honoring Jake Howard McGeehan of Jim Thorpe Boy Scout Troop 555 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He thanked the Scouts, troop leaders and families for keeping the Boy Scouting program alive in the area.Nothstein added that the county has not received many Gold Award recipients from Girl Scouts and doesn't know why the families aren't requesting it."The girls and Girl Scouts deserve the recognition as much as the boys do," he said, noting that the commissioners would be more than happy to honor a girl who achieves her Gold Award, which is the highest award in Girl Scouting."Congrats to all who move onto that high honor," Nothstein said.
