Lansford, PV officials to discuss bus stops

A committee of Lansford Borough Council will meet with officials of Panther Valley School District to discuss possible bus stop changes.

At a council meeting Monday, it was agreed to meet with the district over the stops at Jones and Patterson streets (Route 209) and on Bertsch Street at the former middle school. The meeting was the result of a request made by Kenneth Marx, business manager of the district, who urged that the borough and district "look at alternatives to these two stops for the 2014-2015 school year."Councilman Tommy Vadyak opposed moving the stops, saying they have been there for over 30 years. However, council member Rose Mary Cannon said, "It probably wouldn't hurt to meet with them."Council member Mary Soberick also supported the meeting, noting that as much as 10 years ago there was talk of moving the Jones Street stop off Route 209. She said back then, a revision to the pickup schedule would have meant 12 extra stops for the bus driver, but it actually could be changed, making just three stops. Her major concern was that as many as 50 to 70 youngsters are at each of the bus stops, and that often they show up a half-hour early. Some of the children are accompanied by their parents, making for even larger crowds.Council members said such large gatherings are very difficult for crossing guards to monitor and control.Vadyak then agreed to let the borough meet with the district. The committee meeting with the district consists of Soberick, council member Samantha Yasson and council President Martin Ditsky, a former school bus driver.
