Students show off artwork; fundraiser benefits school

Support is indeed a two-way street at St. John Neumann Regional School.

Further proof of that could be seen at the Drive for Kids fundraiser during the school's annual art show on Tuesday.The fundraiser at the school's Palmerton campus benefits the after-school program.Inside the gymnasium, the walls and floor space were covered with a sea of artwork created by students at both the school's Palmerton and Slatington campuses.In a true show of pride, sixth-grader Timothy Hillanbrand pointed out a drawing of flowers he created through the use of markers and watercolors."It was part of our assignment," Timothy said. "I think it turned out pretty good."Eighth-grader Jonathan Hillanbrand said he was glad to see the public endorse the event."It's always good to see the people come out and support us," Jonathan said. "The Drive For the Kids, and also to see their (the students') hard work."In the school parking lot, Rentschler Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram of Slatington assisted with the fundraising by providing minivans and volunteers to answer questions.Parents and guests who took test drives earned a $10 contribution for the school, which will be put toward enrichment programs. As part of the test drives, vehicles played a video that spoke to bullying prevention on in-car video monitors.Art instructor Paula Zelienka said she was pleased with what she referred to as a "great turnout.""The artwork turned out fabulous," Zelienka said. "And the Drive for Kids raised a lot of money."Drive for Kids is sponsored by Rentschler Chrysler Jeep Dodge. Schools that participate in the program receive bullying prevention materials to share with their students and parents.
