Police crash turns deadly in Nesquehoning

A woman is dead following a crash that resulted from a police chase last night in Nesquehoning.

The crash, involved a police officer from the Nesquehoning police department, happened around 6:30 p.m. on Route 209 in Nesquehoning, 1.5 miles north of the Route 93 (Broad Mountain) intersection.Carola Sauers, 69, was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill after being flown there by PennStar helicopter.She was the passenger in a car driven by Michael Sauers, 64. He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, with serious injuries.Police did not release their addresses.The police cruiser was driven by officer Stephen Homanko, 25, who sustained moderate injuries and was also transported to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest.Trooper Shawn M. Noonan of the Lehighton barracks of the state police is investigating.He said Homanko was attempting to negotiate a curve when he lost control causing his vehicle to enter the opposite lane of traffic.State police did not specify that it was a chase, but initial scanner reports said it was a pursuit.Police were assisted at the scene by police officers from Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Nequehoning, and Beaver Meadows, and from fire departments from Nesquehoning, New Columbus, and Jim Thorpe.A state police reconstruction team was dispatched to the scene.Route 209 was closed for hours between Jim Thorpe and Nesquehoning as a result of the crash.Anyone with information should contact police at 610-377-4270.
