Schuylkill prepares for primary

Schuylkill County is gearing up for the May 20 primary election.

Commissioners, at the request of election chief Frannie Brennan, approved hiring 10 machine delivery truck drivers.They are Robert Schlack, Shenandoah, at $210; Joseph Contrady, McAdoo, at $210; Kenneth Eichenberg, Minersville, at $170; Jason Frantz, Girardville, at $160; William Klinger, Frackville, at $160; Thomas Kurtek, Pottsville, at $140; Walter Leashefski, Orwigsburg, at $220; Wayne Robbins, Frackville, at $210; Walter Taylor, Barnesville, at $210; and Kurt Yoder, Hegins, at $200.Commissioners also approved six people to serve on the computing board at $70 each. Their work to begin the computation and canvassing of election returns will start at 9 a.m. May 28 at the election bureau office.The people are Republicans Joann Meyers, Joann Dower and James P. Klock and Democrats Rose Kern, Sharon Chiao and Marylou McGinley.In other election preparations, commissioners approved a polling site change for the west precinct in Coaldale. The site will be the Coaldale Volunteer Fire Co. #1, 121 W. High St.The switch is from the ambulance building on Route 209.In other actions, commissioners approved a contract with Motorola Solutions for the lease/purchase of seven radios for the district attorney's office for $33,800.55.The radios will be leased over five years, with annual payments of $6,750.78. This lease/purchase is through the COSTARS purchasing agreement.
