A Carbon County woman who led police on a 12-mile high-speed chase last month has had her charges bound over to Carbon County Court.
Michelle Kobal, 44, of Lehighton, was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.Instead, Kobal opted to waive her right to the hearing for a stipulation to a guilty plea, and will appear for a pretrial status conference at 1 p.m. May 29 in the district attorney's office at the courthouse in Jim Thorpe.Kobal faces charges of 11 counts of violating stop signs and yield signs, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving under the influence, careless driving, reckless driving, maximum speed limits, driving vehicle at unsafe speed, driving while operating privilege suspended or revoked, and unlawful possession of controlled substance. She has been recommitted to Carbon County Prison under $2,000 straight bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Franklin Township patrolman Joel Gulla:Gulla was on patrol in the area of Main Road and Canal Street when he got behind a red 1996 BMW at 1:29 a.m.The car sped up, turned onto Bank Street and ran the stop sign at Interchange Road. The BMW fled from Gulla and continued to accelerate, reaching speeds of over 100 mph.The car, later determined to be driven by Kobal, continued north on Route 209 toward the state police barracks. The chase continued for a few miles, when Kobal made a right turn onto Hemlock Street in the area of Beltzville Airport, continued at high speed and ran another stop sign at Boyer Farm.Kobal blew through another stop sign at Dairy Road and Maple Drive, continued toward the back of Blue Ridge Country Club and ran another stop sign at the intersection of Dairy Road and Golf Road.Kobal was traveling all over the roadway and continued at a high rate of speed, running another stop sign at Dairy Road and Fireline Road.Stop sticks deployedPalmerton Police deployed stop sticks, but Kobal was able to evade them, turned left and traveled east on Fireline Road toward Palmerton Area High School.Kobal then turned onto Golf Road, where the car almost went off the right side of the roadway before going back onto Dairy Road. She ran another stop sign at Dairy Road and Maple Drive.Kobal kept speeding with Gulla still in pursuit, ran another stop sign and turned onto Hemlock, where the car almost rolled over. The car then traveled toward Fireline Road to Cherry Hill Road, where officer Frank Buonaiuto of the Franklin Township Police Department was waiting with stop sticks deployed.Kobal ran that stop sign, ran over the spikes and almost struck Buonaiuto.Gulla then went around the spikes and continued to follow. Kobal's driver's side front tire went flat as she traveled up Cherry Hill Road and turned onto Gun Club Road. The chase endsKobal turned out her lights and slowed, losing the passenger side front tire as she turned onto Molly Road, hit the curb and stopped. As Gulla went to get out, Kobal took off again, traveling up the road another 200 yards, where she went off the right side of the roadway and got stuck.Franklin Township Police blocked Kobal's door as Gulla approached along with units from Palmerton, Lehighton and East Penn police.Kobal wouldn't come out of the car, and said the windows didn't work, so police had to break the driver's side window to get her out. While speaking to her, Gulla noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath, and she spoke with slurred speech and her eyes were bloodshot.Kobal was arrested and transported to Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, where her blood alcohol content was tested.During further investigation, it was learned that Kobal's driver's license was under suspension.A Baby Phat purse was found on the driver's side floor with a clear plastic baggie containing what appeared to be crystal meth, a digital scale and a bunch of small, clear bags used to package drugs. A small spoon with residue on it was also found in the purse.Further searching found a gold box with a mirror that had white residue on it, a white straw with residue on it, and three plastic baggies with residue in Kobal's other purse on the passenger side floor.A field test was done on the substance in the clear plastic bag that was found in the first purse was positive for meth.
