Hearings continued in case of baby's death

Preliminary hearings for a couple facing charges related to the death of their six-week-old infant son, Bronx Kuhla, were continued at the request of their respective defense attorneys.

Alyssa Shellhammer, 23, and Joseph Kuhla, 22, were charged with endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment in connection with the sudden, unexpected death of their son. They were scheduled for preliminary hearings before District Judge Stephen Bayer on Tuesday, but both asked to have their cases continued.According to court papers filed by Tamaqua Police Cpl. Henry Woods, officers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to 307 Arlington St. at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 5 for an unresponsive child.Attempts were made at the scene to revive the child, who was not breathing. Ambulance personnel then transported the baby to St. Luke's Miners Hospital in Coaldale, where Bronx was declared dead a short time later. In the first interviews conducted by Woods, Shellhammer claimed Bronx was sleeping in pack-and-play and she discovered him not breathing when Kuhla woke up to use the bathroom.Kuhla corroborated that account, at first. He later told investigators the couple had placed the baby in bed with them and their three other children. When one of the children awoke, crying, he went to use the bathroom. Shellhammer then discovered the unresponsive infant and they called 9-1-1.Shellhammer is being represented by Atty. Andrew Zelonis, while Kuhla's lawyer is Schuylkill County Public Defender Atty. Michael O'Pake.A new date has not been set for the hearings.
